Algoculture de Zanzibar
Project Paje et Jambiani, Unguja, Tanzanie
Farming of Eucheuma and Kappaphycus red seaweed developed since 1989 along the east coast of Unguja, worked mostly by women in the intertidal zone. Output is exported for carrageenan extraction, with recent efforts to process it locally into cosmetics and food. A joint United Nations programme launched in August 2025 targets 15,000 households on Unguja and Pemba.
