Fifth-generation district heating and cooling network drawing water from the former coal mines of Heerlen, in service since 2008 and run by Mijnwater BV since 2013. Connected buildings exchange surplus heat and cold with one another before drawing on the underground resource. The network keeps expanding, with new connections and boreholes in 2026.
